Chamber Forum 2011 Edition 9

1.) Green Connections is a business mentoring group for green businesses.  For more information visit http://www.green-connections.com/. They have been meeting monthly in Bradford and Alliston on the 2nd Thursday morning of each month. The next meeting in Alliston is Thursday June 9th from 9 to 11 am in the Nottawasaga Futures offices at 39 Victoria St E, Alliston.  If you have any questions about the group please contact Cathy Nesbitt at 905-775-9495.

2.) Health and Safety Solutionsis offering WHMIS training in Alliston on Wednesday, May 4, from 9:00 am-11:00 am at the MMEA restaurant in Alliston for $25.00.  A light breakfast will be available for $5.00.  You will receive proof of training with a wallet card.  Workplace hazardous materials information systems training is required yearly for all workers in Canada who may work with controlled substances.  What is a controlled substance?  Come out and learn.  As a business owner you are required to demonstrate due diligence, here is an opportunity to promote your safe work practices.  Call to register today at 905 936-4616.

3.) Marks Work Wearhouse (Alliston) is hosting our Ladies Night on Thursday May 5th from 5pm until 11pm.  20% off everything storewide, no minimum purchase necessary and includes all regular and sale priced items.

4.) Come out to the Starlite Lounge at the Nottawasaga Inn & Resort for our beer & wing special Mon-Thurs 3-6pm.  To see a list of performers and for more information please see attached flyer.

5.) The Alliston & District Chamber of Commerce is having our annual Golf Tournament this year at the Nottawasaga Inn & Resort (Nottawasaga Course) on Wednesday June 1st at 1:30pm.  The cost is $115 per person or $425 per foursome plus tax.  This includes 18 holes, cart and a steak dinner.  If you register by May 6th you will be entered in our early bird draw to bring a guest fore FREE.  We are looking for silent auction items and sponsors.  Call the office at 705-435-7921 for more information or see attached for a registration form.

6.) Start shopping for Mother’s Day at participating Alliston Business Improvement Area stores for you chance to win some great prizes and support your local retailers.  See attached for a listing of participating stores.

7.) Please join Matthews House Hospice at St. Johns United church May 1st for 4th annual Hike for Hospice.  Across Canada, join thousands who are hiking to raise much needed funds to support their local hospices.  According to Statistics Canada, almost 90% of those in need each year can benefit from a hospice, but only 2 or 3 out of 10 will be fortunate enough to receive end-of-life support.  Even fewer receive assistance to help them and their families cope with grief and bereavement.  Matthews House will use the funds raised to enhance the quality of life for all those young or old who are living with a life threatening illness, their families, or the bereaved.  Help us make a difference, create a team, or sign up as an individual on line or pick up registration forms at Matthews House, Wray’s Pharmacy or call the hospice at 705-435-07218.  Further information and forms available online at www.matthewshousehospice.ca.

8.) Our eagerly awaited annual Plant Sale - Alliston Horticultural Society and Banting High School students.  Saturday, May 21, 2011: 8 am - 11.30 am at the Banting Memorial High School Greenhouse.  Perennials, Annuals, Roses, Bake Table and more.

9.) In Central Ontario, Canadian Blood Services forecasts that it needs to collect nearly 160,000 units in 2011/2012 to meet patient and hospital demand.  In order to help meet this demand we need to recruit approximately 15,000 new blood donors over the next year.  Attend a blood donor clinic near you and help save up to three lives!  Call 1 888 2 DONATE (1 888 236-6283) to make an appointment at your local clinic, or visit www.blood.ca  for more information.  Upcoming clinics - St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church – Thurs May 19th from 2:30 – 7:30pm and Nottawasaga Inn – Friday May 27th from 4:30 – 7:30pm.

10.) South Simcoe Arts Council

  • We are pleased to announce the South Simcoe Arts Council’s presents Author GREIG STEWART.  On Wednesday May 11th at 7:30 pm there will be a presentation and meet the Author Reception at the Millpond Centre, Lower Level, located at 106 Victoria St. W. in Alliston.  Greig Stewart will present "ARROW THROUGH THE HEART"… Death of the Avro Arrow.  Tickets are available through the SSAC office or during any of our SSAC spring events.  This is a fundraising event for the South Simcoe Arts Council.
  • “Youth Arts by the River†14th Annual Juried Youth Art Show from May 28 – June 11, 2011 at the Millpond Centre Mezzanine located at 106 Victoria Street West, Alliston.  Returning this year “2011 Juror’s Choice Awardâ€.  Art Show Applicants Invited: Elementary to Grade 12.  Arts on Main began 7 years ago and this year is partnering with the Millpond Arts Group to carry out the Youth Arts by the River program as part of the Festival of the Arts.
